ACFS
The needs of the communities we serve have increased significantly in recent years; firstly, as a result of the scourge of HIV and AIDS which has left many families without breadwinners and – more recently – the global economic recession which has led to the loss of some 35 000 jobs nation wide every month.

Steve Biko Foundation
The Steve Biko Foundation is a community development organization inspired by the legacy of Bantu Stephen Biko. An examination of the leading South African institutions that have contributed to shaping national discourse, highlights the void that exists in promoting the intangible aspects of development: identity, culture and values, the issues that speak to the soul of a nation. Since its inception, the Steve Biko Foundation has sought to fill this gap; and in the coming decade will intensify its efforts to strengthen democracy by championing dialogue, scholarship and programmes on the relationship between identity, agency, citizenship and social action.

PITSENG TRUST
A women's funding organisation founded by women from historically subordinated communities of South
Africa.
Established in 1998 in response to the need for an alternative approach to funding women for their total
emancipation.
ABOUT THE NAME
Say "Pitseng" and the image that one evokes is the traditional tri-legged pot used by women to cook food. Such food is, most times, made from simple and scarce ingredients. Yet, entire communities survive on it! Thus
Pitseng is a symbol of strength and survival - of life itself which transfigures its stereotype as a sign of women's subordination. Ingenuity, intellect, resourcefulness, commitment-these are the other ingredients women
throw everyday "into the pot of life".

Monde Walks - Dare2Dream
My name is Monde Sitole and I was born on 25th June 1990 and All my life one of my greatest desires has been to travel-to see and touch unknown countries, to swim in unknown seas, to circle the globe, observing new lands, seas, people, and ideas with insatiable appetite, to see everything for the first time and for the last time, casting a slow, prolonged glance, then to close my eyes and feel the riches deposit themselves inside me calmly or stormily according to their pleasure, until time passes them at last through its fine sieve, straining the quintessence out of all the joys and sorrows.
I was part of the first Africans to cross the Atlantic on a tall ship whilst also attending school on board on a voyage from cape to Bermuda via Namibia,St Helena,Ascension Island,Fernando Island,Brazil,Trinidada, and Tobago and I also partaked on the Mike Horn young explorer's camp held at the Swiss Alps. After that I gave all my energies to a long forgotten goal of mine that is to summit the seven summits but this time I wanted something with and extra oumf! so I chose the seven summits plus the 2poles that is climbing the highest mountain peaks on each continent and trekking the 2poles .
I now have summited Kilimanjaro. And January 2011 I'm heading to Aconcagua and as for the rest of the year is just climbing and more climbing .for me climbing is like as Anatoli Boukreev said it that Mountains are not stadiums where I satisfy my ambition to achieve, they are the cathedrals where I practice my religion.
And after that I want to climb the highest peaks on each continent and ski the two poles, then after I want to climb all fourteen 8000 peaks without oxygen.then I want to cross all the four deserts solo.
There is still more: my metaphysical poetry has been featured on poetry anthologies and the is a Doccie being shot about the whole expedition and I'm opening a indoor rockclimbing wall in Khayelitsha Townships.

BUILD YOUR FUTURE
"Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it.
Because what the world needs is people who have come alive." ~ Howard Thurman
BACKGROUND:
FREEDOM
Most of us have uttered this word at some point, but do we really understand what it means?
Amongst the definitions of "freedom", one will find "the absence of necessity or constraint in choice or action." As citizens of developed nations, we may not always consider this important distinction when judging the actions of people not fortunate enough to live in the industrialised world. How would you survive on less than $1 a day?
What would you do to feed your family under such circumstances? How does one build a future for themselves without release from such constraints?
When choices are limited to the desperate or the more desperate, there can be no freedom.
What can be done to offer the promise of freedom to build a future of their own?
One word.
EDUCATION
A means to the realization of an individual. Education broadens the choices people have to attain the promise of one's potential.
Improving employability includes critical income-earning skills such as vocational and entrepreneurial skills, as well as creative and analytical skills to provide flexible competencies to match changing market demands.
A dedicated cadre of development agencies, non-governmental organizations and communities throughout the world are doing extraordinary work with primary education, HIV/Aids, malaria and other preventable disease.
However, insufficient focus is given to those adults who are living with these realities NOW - and the despair and hopelessness that accompanies a lack of education, minimal opportunities, coupled with the responsibility of taking care of themselves and their families frequently force people to make a choice between starvation or crime.

VUKA TRUST
The Vuka Trust is a South African based development-focused non-profit organisation focused on upliftment of the impoverished and previously disadvantaged of the Southern African Region.
The challenges facing our area of the world are not unique but Africa flavours its children’s challenges with the harsh skies of the Kalahari and the gentle breezes of the Cape Southeasters and so the manner of address of these challenges sometimes requires unique adaptations to solutions that may be quite practical elsewhere. Our successes are true testaments to endurance and innovation and our failures provide the flavouring to our tomorrows and our people are a celebration of life’s ability to endure, simply through their smiling survival.
The Vuka Trust seeks to embody the spirit of Africa in its quest to enrich lives and heal injustice. We invite all feedback and correspondence and stand ready to assist wherever we can. Some solutions to our uniquely flavoured challenges may serve others in other parts of the world with adoption to their unique circumstances as the sharing of ideas enriches our efforts.
By providing a forum for interaction, sharing and support, the Vuka Trust invites all citizens of the world to be a part of the Healing of Africa, and from its lessons, learnt and shared, may we help to heal the globe.

THEMBALETHU
THEMBALETHU : 'OUR HOPE'
Our Vision
“The communities we serve are free of new HIV infections and those impacted by AIDS and poverty are provided with support services that ensure dignity and promote self-reliance.”
Our Mission
“To provide services which motivate individuals to contribute to a dynamic civil society which cares for all vulnerable children and alleviates the suffering of families affected by HIV and AIDS and poverty.”
In the region of Nkomazi, in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa, bordering with Swaziland and Mozambique, the HIV/AIDS situation is bleak. Medical practitioners report that the incidence of HIV infection is as high as 50% placing Nkomazi among the highest infected communities in South Africa. In addition, local government hospitals estimate that 90% of their beds are used for AIDS-related illnesses. After two years only 1000 patients are on antiretroviral treatment (ARV) from government hospitals in Nkomazi, with an unknown number under treatment from private doctors. Poverty levels are high with 65% of the community unemployed.
By June, 2007, Thembalethu identified more than 4,500 orphans and vulnerable children in the villages in which we operate with over 350 households that are headed by children aged 16-18.
Thembalethu home based care (THBC) offers home based care, orphan care, spiritual counseling, social welfare, garden projects, burials, health services and food parcel distribution.
The impact of HIV is starting to be felt among the youth as more and more of them are dying. THBC formed “Youth In Action”as the HIV preventionprogram which is based on the “Abstinence & Be faithful” platform. Youth in action programs offer a positive and proactive alternative to the typical rural lifestyle which offers little in the way of leisure activities or sports.
Thank you for visiting our web-site and we invite you to explore our organization in more detail.

HANDS AT WORK
Since its initial post-apartheid elections in 1994, South Africa has seen rapid development, especially in the badly-neglected, crime-heavy squatter camp areas surrounding the country’s largest cities. Yet rural communities remain heavily underdeveloped, often still lacking clean water, adequate schools and health care. HIV/AIDS remains a major issue in the country, which holds the largest population, 3.5 million, of HIV-positive people in the world and an alarming number of new orphans each year.
Hands at Work was birthed in South Africa, after George and Carolyn Snyman began Masoyi Home-Based Care in 1997 in the rural Mpumulanga community of Masoyi. It began simply by challenging and training local volunteers to visit the sick and dying in their homes, but quickly expanded to include orphan care, feeding, pre-school care, support groups, and youth work.
The success of the work in Masoyi inspired the notion of replication to poor communities across the continent. Subsequent expansion in South Africa included work in many other communties in Mpumulanga province and partnerships in the Northwest province.

RAPE CRISIS
Vision and Mission
We have a vision of a South Africa in which rape survivors suffer no secondary trauma, and are supported throughout their interaction with the Criminal Justice System (CJS).
Our mission is to promote an end to violence against women, specifically rape, and to assist women to achieve their right to live free from violence. Rape Crisis Cape Town seeks to achieve its mission through counselling and training of women, thereby reducing the trauma experienced by rape survivors, and encouraging reporting of rape and the conviction of rapists.
We will achieve this mission through the following strategic interventions:
Improved services to rape survivors both prior to entering and within the Criminal Justice System in order to minimise secondary victimisation and increase the effectiveness of trials so that conviction rates are increased above the current 4,1% baseline.
Improved services to survivors in communities preventing extended psychological trauma and further physical harm so that when a woman is raped she does not suffer consequences that prevent her from:
parenting her children effectively,
working to generate income and
becoming vulnerable to further harm
because this breaks down the family structure and ultimately the social fabric of our communities
Research into a replicable model for prevention through interventions with youth that modify social norms both in terms of attitudes and behaviour so that the number of rape incidents is reduced and there is increased reporting of rape.
The development of research capacity within Rape Crisis so that our advocacy work has a greater effect, we clearly demonstrate the impact of our work and we have a rich data set on survivors experiences and responses to rape service provision.
Each of these aims will be implemented through our existing services of counselling, training and advocacy combining deterrent, preventive and restorative interventions into a comprehensive strategy.
