More arrests soon as Gordhan outlines fight against corruption

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan says the government’s procurement systems are to change to ensure greater transparency and accountability to combat corruption.
Presenting his maiden budget to the National Assembly, Gordhan said a major site of both wastage and inefficiency was in the procurement system.

Half of SA living in poverty

ABOUT half of South Africa’s population is living in poverty, a problem that is not going to be solved overnight, says the Deputy Director-General of Social Development, Selwyn Jehoma.
He said the poverty situation in the country was “very significant” and most people believed it would take about a generation to solve.

Rich South Africans are champion givers

WEALTHY South Africans are among the world’s most generous philanthropists, motivated by a sense of ubuntu and the fact that SA is one of the world’s most unequal societies, according to an Absa report released yesterday.
The report is the first snapshot of global philanthropy that uses money and time as metrics, said Absa Wealth, whose affiliate Barclays Wealth drew up the report.
