Workers down tools at Idwala Lime

A strike by over 300 workers at Idwala Lime in Danielskuil, some 145 Kilometers from Kimberly enters its second day today. The dispute centres around organizational rights as Idwala refuses to recognize the National Union of Mineworkers which represents over 60% of the workforce.

NEHAWU is deeply disturbed by the endless reports of criminal conduct and allegations of racist and sexual harassment of women by senior managers of the Western Cape legislature. This follows reports that the MEC of Community Safety, Mr. Lennit Max is on special paid leave pending the outcome of a case brought against him by a former police station clerk of sexual harassment.

NEHAWU CONDEMNS THE SCAREMONGERING TACTICS BY ECONEX

NEHAWU is outraged at the publication of yet another guesstimate exercise purporting to be a credible study on the costs of the National Health Insurance (NHI) in the Business Report (15 February 2010). This time it is the Econex, an institute based at Stellenbosch University, which was commissioned by the Hospital Association of South Africa (HASA), hardly a reassuring indication of objectivity.

Chamber of Mines lost its mind – NUM

A statement from the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) says it is concerned by the deaths of miners, following the death of two miners in accidents yesterday, bringing to four the number of miners who dies this week. The union says it is “infuriated” at comments attributed to the elite Chamber published in the Sowetan that there is a 26% improvement in mine deaths, saying “such views can only come from people who have overly intoxicated themselves with expensive whisky out of the sweat of poor people.”
